Middle East / Africa Hotel Results for March 2011

The Middle East/Africa region reported mixed performance results during March 2011 when reported in U.S. dollars, according to data compiled by STR Global. The region's occupancy ended the month with a 12.9-percent decrease to 57.8 per cent, its average daily rate rose 9.0% per cent to USD172.89, and its revenue per available room fell 5.1% to USD99.98 Below are some highlights:

    * Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, experienced the only double-digit occupancy increase, rising 13.0% to 71.2%.

    * Cairo, Egypt, fell 67.9% in occupancy to 23.3%, reporting the largest decrease in that metric, followed by Beirut, Lebanon, with a 25.0% decrease to 47.9%.

    * Johannesburg, South Africa, rose 17.0% in ADR to $119.33, reporting the largest increase in that metric.

Occupancy for Abu Dhabi in February 2011

Abu Dhabi experienced the largest occupancy increase, rising 21.3 per cent to 60.9 per cent. The city saw a 24 per cent surge in hotel revenues in February aided by regional unrest, key events in the capital and a 90 per cent rise in guests from Saudi Arabia (6,950) said Abu Dhabi Tourism AuthorityAbu Dhabi Tourism Authority

. There was a similar jump in Russian visitors, with the number of guests from the Eurasian country rising 88 per cent to 1,561. Some 175,309 guests stayed in Abu Dhabi's 115 hotels in February, a rise of 17 per cent, while revenue jumped 24 per cent to AED440m ($120.5m).

Middle East and Africa Hotel Pipeline

The Middle East / Africa hotel development pipeline comprises 432 hotels totalling 118,454 rooms, according to the February 2011 STR Global Construction Pipeline Report.

The main activity of hotel development in the region takes places across the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Oman.

Among the markets in the region, Abu Dhabi, UAE, will report the largest increase in supply (89.4%) if every one of the 13,405 additional rooms in its total active pipeline open. Other markets to expect significant increases in existing supply include: Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (77.2% with 4,831 rooms in its total active pipeline); Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (50.5% with 3,033 rooms); Muscat, Oman (49.5% with 1,931 rooms); and Dubai, UAE (49.2% with 28,474 rooms)
